MLK Celebration with Dr. Michael Sorrell

The twelfth annual Grayson County Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Breakfast will be held Monday, January 18 at 7:15 a.m. in Mabee Hall of the Robert J. and Mary Wright Campus Center at Austin College. Sherman and Grayson County Rotary clubs, Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center, Grayson College, and Austin College sponsor the event. Members of the community are welcome. The cost is $15 per person, payable at the door.
The keynote speaker for this year’s breakfast will be Michael J. Sorrell, the 34th President of Paul Quinn College. Under his leadership, the school has become one of the most pioneering small colleges in America and is rapidly becoming a model for urban higher education by focusing on academic rigor, experiential learning, and entrepreneurship. The Washington Monthly recently named President Sorrell one of America’s 10 Most Innovative College Presidents. He completed his undergraduate studies at Oberlin College in Ohio, his J.D. and M.A. in Public Policy at Duke University, and earned his Ed.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. Sorrell serves as a trustee or director for groups such as the College Board, Teach for America, Earth Day Texas, Dallas Regional Chamber, the Dallas Foundation, the Tate Distinguished Lecture Series, and the Department of Education Policy and Leadership for the Simmons School of Education at SMU.
Austin College President Marjorie Hass will welcome guests. Students from Grayson and Austin College service and cultural organizations will participate. The Sherman Federated Choirs, directed by Ella Childs, will provide music.
